Happy first Sunday in August! September can’t be just a month away, can it? Ugh. Anyway…I have a “sort of” recommendation this week and a definite recommendation as well.
The definite recommendation is Leader of the Pack by David Rosenfelt. It’s another in the series of dog-loving main character Andy Carpenter, and this time attorney-Andy has set out to free a man from prison who he unsuccessfully defended six years prior. Adding to the drama is that the man is the son of a mafia boss in New Jersey, and the new evidence that’s surfaced has some really bad people making attempts on Andy’s life. The cast of characters surrounding Andy (most notably Tara, the golden retriever) and his self-deprecating ways make this another wonderful read by Rosenfelt. He’s hands down one of my favorite authors, and I wish he could write a book every month.
I don’t usually do this, but the so-so recommendation for this week is Bone Bed by Patricia Cornwell. I usually like her Kay Scarpetta books, with all the forensic fun in them, but this one wore me out. The story was compelling—two separate, mysterious murders that Kay has to solve using her brain and technology—but there was a ton of side drama. Kay and Benton’s marriage is hanging on by a thread; Kay and her niece, Lucy—computer hacker millionaire—are on edge with each other; Kay has insubordinate employees; Kay’s long-time friend and helper, Marino, is in trouble with the authorities…you get the point. In my humble opinion, there just seemed to be a lot of whining and irritating side-stories that really took away from the plot.
To sum, grab Leader of the Pack for sure, and if you like some drama, then grab Bone Bed as well. I wish you a wonderful Sunday. ‘Til next week, happy reading! 🙂
Hey Girl, Speaking of books, have you made any progress on your latest? Love – Dad
